Mount Doom, indeed.

Today we visited Aoraki, aka Mount Cook, aka Mount Doom. It is one of New Zealand's most popular tourist destinations, especially since the movies.
In the three mile in, three mile out hike we heard American English, Spanish, French (both French and Québécois), German, Croatian, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean, and certainly more.
Why?
Why is it that, upon entering a chapel or cathedral, shrine or temple, people speak in hushed and reverant tones, but when in nature, they speak at the top of their voices, grab the coveted photo on their phone that says, "I was there", and move on? I am offended by such behavior.
And such numbers! Many national parks and other popular tourist destinations (I'm looking at you Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Venice, to name but a few. Even the Mona Lisa is getting her own room.) are limiting attendance.
I live in the state holding Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and can see Rocky Mountain National Park from my living room window, but we no longer visit.
Why?
Because of this disrespectful behavior. Disrespectful to fellow travelers, locals, and nature.
